What's The Moai?

A moai is a social support group. The tradition originated in Okinawa, Japan - it means "meeting for a common purpose" in Japanese. According to research, it's why Okinawan people live longer and happier lives, making the region among the highest concentration of centenarians in the world.

The Moai is a platform that enables content creators to build social support groups for their audience. You can use it to passively run programs that create lasting habit change through accountability and community. In exchange, you get to elevate your impact, understand your users better, and build a more aligned business model.

Meet Matt

Matt is a successful creator.

He writes about productivity in his free time. He has a loyal following - his readers love his content and are always asking for more. He wants to do this full-time, but he isn't making any money... yet.

Creator

Who always struggled to monetize.

None of the existing methods appeal to him. Course creation is too time intensive. Endorsements make him seem opportunistic. Ads result in a poor experience for his users.

Chess

Until he discovered The Moai.

It's a perfect fit. His audience loves that it helps them apply his methods in their lives while connecting with other fans. He loves that he now has a plug and play revenue stream that keeps his content accessible while being aligned with their best interests.

"I’ve finally cracked procrastination after so many years of struggle. There’s still a long way to go, since I’m dealing with a deeply rooted, very old and tricky habit, but this gives me so much hope. That it is actually possible to defeat it and that I can be in control of my own life and mind, while enjoying the process."

How It Works

For Students

1 Skin in the game

Students register for the program by placing a deposit. If they complete the program, it is returned to them. If they don’t, the deposit is donated to charity. We don’t make money if they fail.

Deposit

2 Intimate community

Students are placed into small cohorts (4 people). This is their “Moai” or social support group. Though the program requires individual work, they're all in it together. They are each other’s source of motivation, accountability and shared learning.

Community

3 Weekly challenges

Every week, the Moai is given a challenge and associated self-reflection prompts. It’s ok if a student doesn’t succeed with their challenge, but they must submit their answers to the prompts. If they don’t, their deposit is donated to charity.

Challenge

4 Pay what you want

Students complete the program, newly transformed. They pay what they think it was worth and only if they see results. We only make money if they succeed.

Benefits for Creators

Set it and forget it.

We run the program so you don’t have to. Besides the first-time setup, there is no ongoing involvement required from you. The group learns from their own experiences and supports each other.

Setup

Monetize the right way.

Align your incentives with your audience’s - you only succeed if they do. Get paid to make lives better, not to advertise. This revenue stream doesn’t require you to constantly churn out content or stake your reputation on endorsements.

Monetize

Understand your audience.

Know your users in a way that you couldn’t before. Use their day-to-day experiences as inspiration for future content. Use the private setting as a testbed for new material.

Understand

Elevate your impact.

Before: Creator of inspiring content.
After: Facilitator of real habit change.

Healthy habits

Differentiate yourself with community.

Content is a commodity now. Lack of quality content isn't the bottleneck to real habit change - the lack of action is. Build a tight-knit community focused on execution, and make that your unique selling point.

Benefits for your Audience

Skin in the game

If they don’t complete the program, their deposit is donated to charity. If they complete it, they pay us what they think it was worth. Skin in the game for them and for us: we only make money if they succeed.

Accountability

Their Moai is a tight-knit cohort that knows each other by name. No more lurking - they’re all in this together. If the others can do the work, they can too.

Community

The Moai builds off each other through mutual support and shared learnings. Doing the work is an individual journey, but it doesn’t have to feel like one. There’s nothing quite like growing together.

Our Principles

Aligned Incentives

We only make money if you do, i.e when the students succeed. This eliminates the conflict of interest associated with other business models, e.g ads, endorsements, affiliate links.

Bias towards Action

Content is deliberately sparse in the program. The emphasis is on execution, not education. The lack of content is no longer holding anyone back - it’s the lack of action.

Tighten the Feedback Loop

Writing is thinking. The weekly questionnaire forces students to reflect on what worked and what didn’t. By precisely articulating their own learnings, they discover immediately actionable advice for the next iteration. This yields compounding results over time.
